Understand What Acne Is To Treat It
Ask just about any teen today what one of their biggest problems is and you are likely to hear them tell you it is acne. Although acne can appear in anyone from babies up through senior citizens, it is seen most in teens. It is annoying, it is a problem, especially during the teen years when teens are trying to look their best all the time.
Acne has a lot of different names but it is all the same thing. Common terms include zits, pimples, white heads and more but the most common and most accurate term for all these things is acne.
In reality, acne is actually a form a skin disease. Acne forms when hair follicles under the skin or surface pores in the skin get clogged, forming lesions. They usually start out pinkish in color and eventually grow and can be painful as well. Teens especially are very conscious of acne since acne can mar an otherwise very clear complexion, in both boys and girls.
Acne can often times be cleared up or controlled to a certain extent by the use of over the counter creams and lotions. One of the problems is that you could spend literally hundreds of dollars on different brands of creams and lotions until you find the one that works best for you. Everyone is different, so the acne treatment that works well for one person may have little to no effect for another person.
If you cannot find an acne treatment that is effective for you or if you have severe acne, you may wish to see your doctor, or even better, a dermatologist. A dermatologist is your best bet since they deal with skin diseases every day, and acne is just another skin disease. They can usually recommend the over the counter acne medication that will work best for you, or they may even prescribe a prescription acne treatment if your acne problem is severe.
The best medical evidence today says you should not "pop" your acne when it reaches that stage with a white spot on top. This may provide temporary relief from the discomfort, but since acne is a skin disease, be aware that this can also can that acne spot to leave a scar, and that scar will be with you the rest of your life.
If acne is left totally untreated, it will heal itself in time, although you need to know that acne is very slow at self-healing. Instead of scratching the affected area, it is best to treat it with the appropriate medications. In lieu of medications, your best bet is to do nothing with it except be very conscious to keep that entire area of your face, back, shoulders, or chest as clean as possible, especially from natural skin oils that can build up. If you are not using medicated soap, it is recommended to use a "pure" soap instead of perfumed soap, such as Ivory.
Acne may be unsightly but it is in your best interests to understand what causes it and how to most effectively treat it.
